NATO OR-9
The NATO code for the top enlisted grade: sergeant major, master chief, warrant officer class 1, and the service senior enlisted advisors.
Overview
OR-9 is the apex enlisted grade in the NATO table: US sergeant major, command sergeant major, master chief petty officer, Air Force chief master sergeant, and British warrant officer class 1. Holders serve as senior enlisted advisors to commanders at every level from battalion to the service chiefs, a role institutionalized across the alliance after the 1960s creation of the Sergeant Major of the Army and peers. In NATO headquarters a senior NCO of OR-9 anchors each command. The grade represents two or more decades of service, selection boards, and the technical and moral leadership of the force.
