NATO OF-2
The NATO code for senior company officer grades, typified by the US captain and British captain.
Overview
OF-2 marks the senior company officer grade: captain in most armies and marines, lieutenant in most navies, a source of constant confusion between services since a naval OF-2 is a lieutenant while an army OF-2 is a captain. The grade typically brings company, troop, or flight command, or naval department head duty. In the US system both captain grades meet here despite the title gap. STANAG 2116 establishes the code for standardization of personnel and interoperability, reviewed periodically. Coalition staff officers wear the code on badges in multinational headquarters from SHAPE to NATO response forces.
