NATO OF-1
The NATO standardization code for junior company officer grades across member militaries.
Overview
OF-1 is the bottom officer band of the NATO rank code system, standardized in STANAG 2116 so coalition headquarters can instantly compare seniority. It covers the US second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and the Navy ensign and lieutenant junior grade, the British second lieutenant and lieutenant, and their equivalents across the alliance. In many militaries OF-1 splits into OF-1 and OF-1(D) for degrees of seniority. The codes deliberately ignore national titles: German Leutnant, French lieutenant, Italian sottotenente all simply read OF-1 on the coalition chart. The system enables combined operations without argument over precedence.
