NATO OR-8
The NATO code for senior enlisted grade eight, the first supergrade: senior NCOs and British warrant officer class 2.
Overview
OR-8 is the first of the two senior enlisted supergrades created in the US forces in 1958 and standardized in NATO tables. It covers the US Army master sergeant and first sergeant, the Navy senior chief petty officer, the Air Force senior master sergeant, and the British warrant officer class 2, among others. The grade marks the transition from working technical leader to institutional senior NCO, holding company and department level authority. NATO documents use the code for manning multinational headquarters. The 1958 legislation created E-8 and E-9 grades to retain experienced personnel competing with civilian pay.
