NATO OR-5
The NATO code for enlisted grade five, the sergeant level in most armies and petty officer second class in the US Navy.
Overview
OR-5 covers the junior sergeant level: the US Army and Marine Corps sergeant, the US Navy petty officer second class, and the US Air Force staff sergeant, all at pay grade E-5. The code allows multinational headquarters to match personnel across very different rank systems. Not every member uses every code, and the British Army is a notable example, jumping from corporal at OR-4 to sergeant at OR-6, so that OR-5 is left vacant. Holders of this grade typically lead squads or small teams, supervise junior enlisted personnel, and are the first level at which leadership responsibility becomes formal and routine.
