NATO OF-9
The NATO code for four-star officers: general, admiral, air chief marshal, the top permanent grade.
Overview
OF-9 is the four-star grade: general, admiral, air chief marshal, the highest permanent rank in nearly every member military. Four-stars hold service chief positions, combatant commands, and supreme allied commands: SACEUR, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is a US four-star by tradition. The numbers are fixed in law in the United States and tightly controlled across the alliance. The NATO code makes clear that a French general of army corps, a German General, and a British general sit equally at OF-9. Above this grade exists only OF-10, the wartime five-star ranks, dormant in nearly all members.
