NATO OF-8
The NATO code for three-star officers: lieutenant general, vice admiral, air marshal.
Overview
OF-8 is the three-star grade: lieutenant general, vice admiral, air marshal. Three-stars command corps, numbered fleets, service components of combatant commands, and major NATO commands such as Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. The grade is tied to assignment in most militaries, reverting on tour end unless reappointed. NATO joint posts at OF-8 shape alliance strategy: the deputy supreme allied commanders and many transformation commands wear it. STANAG 2116 keeps the equivalence current as members adjust structures. The jump from two to three stars marks selection for the highest echelons, often fewer than a hundred officers per service.
