NATO OF-7
The NATO code for two-star officers: major general, rear admiral, air vice marshal.
Overview
OF-7 marks the two-star grade: major general in armies, rear admiral upper half in the US Navy, rear admiral in the Royal Navy, air vice marshal in air forces. Two-stars command divisions, carrier strike groups, numbered air forces, and NATO great commands. The grade requires Senate confirmation in the United States and equivalent processes in most members. In NATO force generation documents, OF-7 posts carry two stars and multinational command authority. History remembers many OF-7s: the rank Montgomery held commanding a division in 1939, and the grade of most standing NATO force commanders between rotations.
