NATO OF-6
The NATO code for the first general and flag officer grade, one star: brigadier general, commodore, brigadier.
Overview
OF-6 opens the general and flag officer band, one star in most services: brigadier general in the US and many armies, brigadier in the British Army which insists it is not a general officer, commodore in navies, and air commodore in air forces. The term flag officer comes from naval tradition, where officers of this rank and above flew their own distinguishing flag or pennant, a custom that named the whole band. OF-6 officers typically command brigades, flotillas, and large staff directorates. The NATO code standardizes protocol, reporting chains, and seniority in multinational headquarters.
