NATO OF-10

Flag OfficerNATO Standard

The NATO code for five-star officers, the wartime top ranks: General of the Army, Fleet Admiral, field marshal equivalents.

Overview

OF-10 is the summit of the NATO rank table: five-star ranks such as US General of the Army and Fleet Admiral, British field marshal and admiral of the fleet, French general d armee in historic usage. The grade exists for coalition supreme command in total war: created in the US in 1944 precisely so allied officers would rank correctly against field marshals. Nearly all members keep the rank dormant, with no holders, revivable only in war. The NATO table includes it for completeness of the system. Its American holders, Marshall, King, Eisenhower, Nimitz, Arnold, Bradley, Halsey, Leahy, define the World War Two high command.
