Vice Admiral
A three-star flag officer of the US Navy, O-9 and NATO OF-8, commanding numbered fleets and joint organizations.
Overview
Vice Admiral wears three stars and holds the Navy largest operational commands: numbered fleets like the Seventh in the Pacific, naval force components of combatant commands, and the superintendency of the Naval Academy. The title comes from the vice admiral of the age of sail, the deputy who led the van, the front of the line of battle, under the admiral in the center. OF-8 peers with the Army lieutenant general. Like all three-stars, appointment carries Presidential nomination and Senate confirmation, and the grade expires when the tour does unless renewed by another appointment.
