Petty Officer Second Class
A mid-grade US Navy noncommissioned officer, E-5 and NATO OR-5, a full technical supervisor and work center leader.
Overview
Petty Officer Second Class wears the eagle and rating mark above two chevrons and typically runs a work center, a divisional shop of several sailors, with direct responsibility for maintenance and training. E-5 corresponds to OR-5, the grade a US Army sergeant wears. Advancement combines a national rating examination, performance evaluations, awards, and service record points against quota by rating community, the Navy market mechanism. PO2s qualify as enlisted surface or air warfare specialists and begin mentoring PO3s. The second class title survives from the old sailing hierarchy of first, second, and third class petty officers.
