Senior Chief Petty Officer
A senior US Navy enlisted leader, E-8 and NATO OR-8, wearing an anchor with a single star.
Overview
Senior Chief Petty Officer adds one silver star above the anchor and holds department-level supervisory billets: leading chief petty officer of a department, officer in charge of small craft, or senior enlisted advisor at small commands. E-8 maps to OR-8. Advancement to senior chief weighs examinations, evaluations, and command endorsement, and initiation continues the chief tradition. SCPOs mentor chiefs and first class petty officers, manage programs, and bridge between the Mess and the officer chain. The grade was established in 1958 when Congress added the E-8 and E-9 supergrades across the services.
