Seaman Recruit
The entry enlisted grade of the US Navy, E-1 and NATO OR-1, held by sailors beginning boot camp.
Overview
Almost every enlisted sailor begins naval service as a Seaman Recruit at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes in Illinois, the Navy's only boot camp. Recruits learn seamanship, firefighting, damage control, water survival, and naval customs before graduating and moving on to technical schools or the fleet. Depending on their intended field, junior sailors carry parallel titles in the same grade, such as fireman recruit for engineering ratings, airman recruit for aviation, and constructionman recruit for the Seabees. Advancement to seaman apprentice, E-2, normally follows within months, and the grade is essentially a probationary stage of naval life.
