Rear Admiral
A one-star and two-star flag officer grade of the US Navy, O-7 and O-8, NATO OF-6 and OF-7.
Overview
Rear Admiral comes in two grades, lower half with one star, OF-6, and upper half with two, OF-7, a division restored in the 1980s from the Civil War practice of ranking rear admirals in halves by seniority. One-stars command carrier strike groups as deputies, task forces, and major shore commands; two-stars typically lead strike groups, numbered fleets as deputies, and systems commands. The title dates to the seventeenth century Royal Navy: the rear admiral commanded the squadron at the back of the line of battle, where the admiral could watch it. Senate confirmation attends each star.
