Master Gunnery Sergeant
The senior technical enlisted rank of the US Marine Corps, E-9 and NATO OR-9, addressed as Master Guns.
Overview
Master Gunnery Sergeant wears three chevrons over three rockers with the bursting bomb and represents the technical apex of the Marine enlisted ladder, parallel to the command-track sergeant major, who wears a star device instead. Master Guns hold the deepest specialty knowledge in infantry weapons, artillery, aviation, and communications, advising commanders on technical employment. At OR-9 the grade peers with the Navy master chief and Air Force chief master sergeant. Marines choose between the technical and command tracks late in their careers, a formal fork unique among the services.
