Gunnery Sergeant
A staff noncommissioned officer of the US Marine Corps, E-7 and NATO OR-7, addressed as Gunny.
Overview
Gunnery Sergeant wears three chevrons over two rockers with the bursting bomb device and is the technical and tactical backbone of Marine infantry companies. The title originated in the nineteenth century for the senior artillery and machine gun technician, the gunnery sergeant, and gave the Marine Corps its affectionate address, Gunny. GySgts serve as company gunnery sergeants, platoon sergeants, and operations chiefs, orchestrating training and firepower. At OR-7 the grade peers with the Army sergeant first class and Navy chief. Selection follows a service board weighing the whole record, and the rank is a career landmark in the Corps.
