Lieutenant Junior Grade
A junior commissioned officer of the US Navy, O-2 and NATO OF-1, holding growing division and watch responsibilities.
Overview
Lieutenant Junior Grade wears one full and one thin stripe and is promoted from ensign after roughly two years. LTJGs continue as division officers with greater independence and begin qualifying for underway watches: officer of the deck afloat, tactical action officer trainees, or engineering officer of the watch. The grade is OF-1, the junior company officer band in NATO terms. The title abbreviated lieutenant junior grade descends from the old fleet practice of subdividing lieutenants into classes by seniority, formalized in the Navy rank acts of the nineteenth century.
