Lieutenant
A US Navy commissioned officer, O-3 and NATO OF-2, typically a department head of a small ship or senior division officer.
Overview
Navy Lieutenant wears two full stripes and corresponds in grade, OF-2, to an Army captain, though the same title in the Army names an OF-1. Lieutenants serve as department heads on small ships, senior division officers on large ones, and principal assistants ashore. The rank dates to the age of sail, when lieutenants stood the watches that actually ran the ship under the captain. Promotion to O-3 typically follows three to four years of service. Lieutenants qualify as officers of the deck underway and command small craft and stations in limited billets.
