Fleet Admiral
The five-star US Navy rank, OF-10, created in December 1944 and held by four admirals in history.
Overview
Fleet Admiral was authorized in December 1944, matching the Army General of the Army, so senior American naval commanders would rank allied flag officers in combined theaters. The four recipients were William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey, all elevated between December 1944 and December 1945. The rank is OF-10, lifetime in theory, dormant since the death of the last holder: no officer has held it since. Congress may revive it. The insignia is five stars. Nimitz signed for the United States aboard Missouri wearing it.
