Chief Warrant Officer 2
A US Army warrant officer grade, W-2, at which warrant officers receive a presidential commission.
Overview
Army warrant officers enter as Warrant Officer 1 by appointment from the Secretary of the Army and receive a commission from the president on promotion to Chief Warrant Officer 2. The Army insignia is a silver bar with two black squares. CW2s serve as experienced technicians and trainers in fields such as aviation, maintenance, intelligence, signals, and special operations, and many of the Army's helicopter pilots hold this grade during their first operational assignments. Warrant officers remain specialists rather than generalist commanders, and the grade marks the move from apprentice to proven professional in a technical field.
