Chief Master Sergeant
A top enlisted grade of the US Air Force, E-9 and NATO OR-9, the senior NCO of wings and major commands.
Overview
Chief Master Sergeant wears the E-9 chevrons with a wreathed star device in the center and is the senior enlisted leader of wings, numbered air forces, and major commands. The grade was created in the 1958 supergrade legislation alongside E-8. Chiefs run the enlisted force day to day: discipline, career development, retention, and standards. Command chief master sergeants serve as principal enlisted advisors to wing and command commanders, mirroring the Army command sergeant major. At OR-9 they peer with the Navy master chief and Army sergeant major. Selection boards review entire career fields.
