Airman Basic
The entry enlisted grade of the US Air Force, E-1 and NATO OR-1, worn without insignia in basic training.
Overview
Airman Basic is the Air Force starting grade, worn without stripes through basic military training at Lackland and typically into technical school. The Air Force separated from the Army in 1947 and inherited the enlisted ladder structure, reshaping it around aviation trades: aircrew, maintenance, missile, cyber, space. ABs hold no supervisory duty and advance quickly, most to Airman within months. The word airman was coined with the service itself. OR-1 is the NATO junior grade. Modern basic training emphasizes warfare skills, fitness, and the Air Force standards culture of a technically specialized force.
