How NATO Rank Codes Work

NATO standardization agreement STANAG 2116 assigns every member rank a code: OR-1 to OR-9 for enlisted ranks, WO-1 to WO-5 for warrant officers, OF-1 to OF-10 for officers. The codes exist so coalitions can compare seniority instantly without arguing over national titles.

A US Army sergeant E-5, a British sergeant, and a German Stabsunteroffizier all sit at OR-5. OF-1 covers lieutenants and ensigns, OF-3 to OF-5 the field grades, OF-6 and up the one through four star flag officers.

The system is updated as members reform their forces, and it quietly runs every multinational headquarters in the alliance..
